The Playwright's Toolkit

Everyone has a story inside them.

What's yours?

And how do you get it out?

This is an introduction to playwrighting as totally different to the creative writing taught in schools.  We will focus entirely on live drama and you will be supported in writing your own plays through group activites, solo work, and one-on-one mentoring.  You'll build confidence in creating and sharing your writing in fresh new ways that don't always involve sitting stooped over a table. Over a series of six sessions you will be encouraged to bring out the best of your imagination, and given the tools to do so. This will culminate in a sharing of short pieces written during the course, performed by yourselves and your fellow writers.

You can come along with any level of previous writing experience, you don't have to be an actor, and we don't care about spelling or grammar or any of that - this is going to be about getting ideas out of your head and onto the stage (not the page).

Isley is an award-winning playwright whose work has been published and performed in the UK and the USA.  She is a graduate of the Royal Court Young Writers Programme and was a Creative Associate of the Soho Theatre Young Company from 2011-2012.  Her critically acclaimed debut play Leanenjoyed an extended run at the Tristan Bates Theatre (2013) and her play Skin A Cat was showcased as part of the IdeasTap Takeover:Love at Rich Mix (2014).  She was twice-named Champion of Literary Death Match (Norfolk and Norwich Festival and The Book Club, London) and won first place for two Editor's Briefs (IdeasTap) with the poems Sweetbread and The body but hides the heart.  Her short play Sleight Of Hand for BAREtruth Theatre's Little Stitches was performed at Theatre503, Arcola theatre and Gate theatre in 2014, and her newest play Tether will run at the Underbelly - Big Belly space, for the duration of the 2015 Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
